Pianos (or keyboards), with their distinctive layout of black and white keys, are versatile musical instruments that have been integral to Western music for centuries. With a standard of 88 keys, pianos can vary in size, but they all operate by activating hammers that strike strings, making them both percussion and stringed instruments! When a key is pressed, the corresponding damper lifts off the string, allowing it to vibrate and produce sound upon impact from the hammer (this is called the “escapement”).

There are two main types of pianos: grand pianos and upright pianos, each offering a unique playing experience. The piano's popularity stems from its ability to adapt to various music genres, including classical, jazz, rock, pop, and beyond. Additionally, its role in songwriting and composition is invaluable, thanks to its wide range and expressive capabilities.

What to Expect From Lessons:

Piano/keyboard lessons are highly popular at Presto for good reason! It is an outstanding choice for beginners and young learners, offering an accessible entry point to musical education. Learning the piano provides a quick sense of achievement, with beginners often playing simple tunes within just a couple of weeks! This early success helps cultivate a passion for music and encourages students to develop consistent practice routines. Moreover, piano lessons lay a solid groundwork in music literacy, scales, and fundamental music theory, creating a strong basis for future musical endeavors.

Beginning students will expect to learn the fundamentals of piano playing, including naming the keys, reading music, and counting the beats. For more advanced students, we offer opportunities to refine technical skills and enhance musical interpretation through challenging exercises and complex pieces of music. We prioritize well-rounded musicianship, providing comprehensive piano lessons that encompass theory, ear training, sight reading, technique, and history.

Common Questions About Piano Lessons:

Do I need an expensive piano to start?

Absolutely not! In fact, we encourage starting on a simple electric piano or keyboard for a few hundred dollars. This allows the student to be sure of their decision without having to ‘break the bank’ and invest in an expensive instrument. Not to mention, an electric keyboard takes up a lot less space than a full standup or grand piano! Starting with an electric keyboard makes it easier to practice at home, plus they often come with features like built-in metronomes and different sounds that can enhance the learning experience. As skills develop, students can always upgrade to a larger, more sophisticated instrument when they're ready.

When is a good age to start taking piano lessons?

Any age! Fortunately, because the piano is a relatively easy instrument to start, students are encouraged to begin lessons at a very young age. Famous classical pianist Lang Lang started his private lessons at age 3! This early exposure helps to develop musical skills and foster a love for music that can last a lifetime. Beginning lessons early can also aid in cognitive development, as learning to play the piano enhances critical thinking, memory, and coordination. For younger students, our friendly instructors create a fun and engaging learning environment, using age-appropriate songs and techniques that make practice enjoyable. However, it’s never too late to start! Adults and teens can equally benefit from learning the piano, whether for personal enjoyment, stress relief, or a new challenge. At Presto Music and Performing Arts, we cater to all ages and learning styles, ensuring that every student can achieve their musical goals. Whether you’re a parent looking for a wonderful activity for your child or an adult eager to explore your musical talents, piano lessons are a fantastic choice!

How often should I practice?

Practice time varies by age, skill level, and goals. Beginners and younger students should practice 15-25 minutes daily to build a strong foundation without stress. Intermediate students should practice for at least 45 minutes a day to improve their skills and repertoire. Advanced students may practice for several hours to refine their abilities and explore creativity. Consistency is essential; a regular practice schedule enhances learning and discipline. Focused sessions are always more valuable than just practicing for hours without a clear purpose.
